May Van Sickle Children's Dental Clinic
We accept referrals for children from 5 to 18 years of age in need dental care and without means.
In 1939, the Club founded the May Van Sickle Children's Dental Clinic for underprivileged children. It is located in our clubhouse and is the primary beneficiary of our fund-raising efforts. The sole purpose of our Dental Clinic is to provide free dental care for needy school-age children in Dade County - children whose parents work hard, but cannot afford costly dental care and are often inelligible for public health programs. Children are referred to our Clinic by school personnel, social workers, United Way, community religious organizations and parents. Our volunteer caseworkers interview applicants and determine their eligibility.
Many of these children have never visited a dentist. The majority of children require extensive fillings, root canals and crowns. The initial visit includes cleaning, X-rays, and an evaluation for long-term treatment. A child comes to the Clinic weekly until all necessary work is completed. Our dentists and hygenists provide cleaning, flouride treatments and teach proper brushing, flossing and oral hygiene. In the year 2005-06 we provided over $125,760 worth of free dental care for 826 patient visits. The Clinic operates from September through May and is open Monday and Tuesday 9:00 -1:00 PM and rotates every other Wednesday open from 9:00 -1:00 PM and rotates every other Saturday 9:00 -2:00 PM. Funds are continuously being expended to upgrade and modernize our facilities and equipment. The Dental Clinic is housed in the historic, former Coral Gables Library at 1009 East Ponce De Leon Boulevard. Call 305-448-6536 for more information.
Since 1939, the Coral Gables Woman's Club has always had a major fund-raiser for the May Van Sickle Children's Dental Clinic. The past few years they have held their Annual Casino Night. The last Casino Night raised $90,000 for the Dental Clinic. Click here to help us sponsor a child or make a donation.
